And at the other, real-time global multidisciplinary networks capable of discovering new vaccines; investigative journalism on the dark-money ‘offshore’ domain; policing insurrections; acting as intel agencies; modeling and forecasting climate change; etc.
Same essential dynamic is visible: new techs enable exploration of the possibility space of sociotechnical forms, whether old, new, or a hybrid. They do so by destructuring ‘the middle tier’ of the landscape — whether that’s media, companies, nations, economic classes, politics.
It’s not centralize <> decentralize – those instances are always present, just not equally visible / prominent — it’s what’s happening to the middle that’s the indicator of the nature of a given era.
And by what’s happening, the primary question is whether levels / quality / durability of structure in the middle = increasing or decreasing. There’s no stasis; only speed and valence.
